Is 1500 mg of Depakote too high a dose for my bipolar friend? I was wondering what other peoples' dosage is. His seems awful high. It showed up as slightly toxic on his blood test at his MD's office. His psychiatrist isn't in until Monday but I advised him to cut down to 1000 mg until he sees his doctor. I'm no doctor, but cutting down is just common sense, isn't it? Your thoughts and comments are appreciated.

lisa1cares replied: "the advice you gave was given in good faith and as a caring person but the best thing that you really should tell your friend to do is see a doctor if he can't see his until Monday he could go to the ER and just make sure all is well. With this kind of medication its normally a slow reduction and not so fast as dropping 500 on one go. take care good luck edit I forgot to say that the normal dose is between 1000-1500 so the dose your friend is on is not over that just on the top end of it. and there is others that are on even higher doses then that"

could a high level of depakote cause ammonia to be found in bloodstream? My brother weighs around 140lbs,is 45 and takes 3000mg a day to control seizures. He has been taking depakote since he was 4yrs old. Due to seizures caused by a high fever that gave him brain damage. He hasn't had levels taken but once a year. He is also on tegratal and several other medications. His stomach is extended and he has some pain and blood in bowel movements- could be from hemerroids? Thank you for your time.

Stephen H replied: "My first question is how do you know there is an excess of amonia in the blood stream? One of the serious side effects of depakote can be adominal/rectal bleeding, go to a doctor. Valproate (depakote) may also raise the levels of tegratol in the blood stream. Your doctor had better damn well be telling you about the regular blood work you need, to check your valproate levels and to make sure your liver is functioning normally. Meds that cause abdominal pain and distention should be reviewed with your doctor"

can u high from depakote? my brother takes depacote is i take like 500 MG will i get highh?

med109 replied: "Why would you want to take your brother's meds? That's taking something from him that helps him. Do you realize if you take 3 of his pills away that is 3 days that he will have to go without, and if he is taking it for seizures it could really harm him. Plus it is illegle. But it won't get you high, you may get a mild buzz (lightheaded, dizzy) this drug can also cause liver failure."
